Federal Elections in Mexico 2006: Union Congress Party Makeup

(Esta entrada está disponible también en español.)

Today's edition of Mexico City's El Universal reports on the Union Congress party makeup following the 2006 federal elections, as disclosed by the Federal Electoral Institute (figures in parentheses show changes with respect to the preceding federal election: 2003 for the Chamber of Deputies - including the special elections in Torreón and Zamora - and 2000 for the Senate).

Chamber of Deputies: PAN, 206 (+55); PRD, 127 (+30); PRI, 103 (-121); PVEM, 18 (+1); C, 17 (+12); PT, 16 (+10); PANAL, 9 (+9); PASC, 4 (+4).

Senate: PAN, 52 (+6); PRI, 33 (-27); PRD, 29 (+14); PVEM, 6 (+1); C, 5 (+4); PT, 2 (+1); PANAL, 1 (+1).

It should be noted that for the first time in Mexico's history, PAN is the largest
party in both houses of Congress: in the 2000 federal election, the PAN-PVEM alliance won 223 seats in the Chamber, but 17 of these went to PVEM, and the remaining 206 to PAN - five fewer than the 211 seats obtained by PRI in that contest.
