Presidential and Legislative Elections in Chile, Part I
by Manuel Álvarez-Rivera

Two decades ago, the Republic of Chile began its transition to democracy when Chilean voters rejected extending the presidential mandate of General Augusto Pinochet in a referendum held on October 5, 1988. A succession of popularly elected, civilian regimes have ruled the South American country since 1990, but some aspects of Pinochet's authoritarian legacy persist to this day, most notably among them the binomial electoral system, which will be described in Part II of this presentation.
